These are some questions, that you have maybe asked yourself while planning your project.
It is the Ministry of Environment and Energy and itīs in charge of many permits like cutting trees in forests,
agroforestry systems, and homogeneous plantations.

It is the spanish name for the National Environmental Technique Secretary. In charge of everything that has to do with
development, earth moving, roads and bridges construction, buildings, among many others.

- 3. What the Municipality is?
Local government that rules everything about construction permits. First you need to get the permits from MINAE and
the license from SETENA when required.

Is the National Fund for Forestry, in charge of the Payment for Environmental Services (PES) program, which is a cash incentive that the Costa Rican
Government pays to landowners who want to conserve forest intact and/or releasing the open areas for reforestation.

Yes, you will need to get the License from SETENA and then the permit from the Municipality.

- 6. Can I cut trees in a forest?
Yes, but it is a little complicated to get the permits.

- 7. Which trees doesnīt need a permit to be cut and under which conditions?
Trees from homogeneous plantations or non-native trees from agroforestry systems can be harvested without a permit. Those trees
must be 15 horizontal meters away from any course of water (50 horizontal meters if slope is over 40%). But keep in mind that
transportation of any tree will need a permit, no matter if it is a non-native species.

- 8. What limitations would I have if I let the natural regeneration grow to a new forest?
When you release a pasture or agriculture area to natural regeneration, then you will have a secondary forest. Young forests have the same
regulations that old (primary) forests, so then you could not change the use to do other project there.

- 9. Can I cut a portion of the forest in my farm to build something?
Maybe, now it is not allowed. But there is a project (not approved yet) to allow the landowners to cut 10% of the forest to make projects. Still waiting for news...
- 10. What a water concession is?
When buying a property in Costa Rica, you are the owner of the land. However, the water on your property belongs to the Government.
You have the right to use this water, but not without a permit. This permit is the Water Concession.
